3 Personal Development Books for Your Coffee Table
By: Jeanne Kelly
Back in my mid-twenties, I was navigating one of the most challenging seasons of my life. I had just gotten married, given birth to my daughter Cassandra, and had finished building my dream home with my then-husband when it became clear that our marriage wasn’t going to work. I believe in moving forward, always. Low points are often turning points. However, as a new mother leaving behind a fairytale, it felt immensely scary.
Not to mention my finances were a disaster. I was fortunate enough to be given a place to stay on my parents’ farm. There was this tiny little cottage intended for short visits when friends and family would stop by, that became my new home. Waitressing wasn’t exactly cutting the bills either, so living off noodles, driving a run-down car, and receiving threats about my electricity getting shut off was the new norm. But this cottage was such a blessing and I have always been passionate about finding joy in the simple things. I was determined to make our new home as charming as possible. And it certainly had charm. I remember there were these big, beautiful windows that opened up a gorgeous view of the fields, which I found myself gazing at in awe while drinking my morning coffee.
I’ll always remember that first summer and the little wooden coffee table next to the bookshelf. It brought comfort amidst the chaos. That’s when my love for personal development books started and continued to grow. I can honestly say this kept my spirits high and entertained my imagination with a different reality than the one I was living. The hope of possibilities swirled endlessly through my mind. I knew I could create a better life for my daughter and I. I knew that I would. And that’s where my path to successful entrepreneurship truly began. Because to me, success is so much more than monetary reward and accolades. It’s about honoring your values and cherishing what brings you peace.
So wherever you’re at in life right now, no matter the season or how bad your financial situation seems, I want you to know that the possibilities are endless for you too! And if you’re looking to curate a summer reading list that will inspire new ideas, empower your mindset, and move you forward into the next season of your life, I highly recommend some of my favorites…
