The holidays are here, and with them come two of the biggest shopping events of the year: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I recently joined Experian’s #CreditChat as a guest panelist to talk about how to shop smart, protect your credit, and keep your peace of mind while still enjoying the season.
Here are my key takeaways from that conversation — practical, real, and straight from experience.
It starts with what you truly have to spend — not what’s available on your credit card.
Write a list and stick to it.
When you see your numbers clearly, you make smarter, calmer choices instead of emotional ones.
The challenge during Black Friday or Cyber Monday is that everything feels like a “must-have deal.”
Don’t get caught in the excitement.
Make your shopping list early, know your limits, and remember this: no one wants a gift that puts you in debt.
I love using credit cards for the rewards and buyer protections — but only if you’re disciplined enough to pay them off right away.
If you know you tend to overspend, switch to debit or cash. The best payment method is the one that keeps you in control.
I always start shopping early, especially for the traditions that make the holidays special.
For example, I buy our family holiday pajamas ahead of time and look for stores that offer price matching within 30 days.
That’s how you save smart, not last-minute stressed.
Earn those rewards — but treat your credit card like a debit card.
Stick to your list, make your purchase, and then pay it off the same week.
That’s how you win the reward game without any post-holiday regret.
Know your triggers!
If you’re tempted by every sale email, step away from the computer.
Plan time with friends or family on those “deal days” to avoid falling into the scroll trap. Sometimes distraction is the best defense.
Scammers love the holidays.
Never click on a random text or email link promising unbelievable deals.
Always type the retailer’s official website directly into your browser, and double-check the URL — one wrong letter can lead you straight into a scam site.
Before hitting “buy,” look for 30-day return or price-match policies.
That flexibility helps you shop early and still take advantage of price drops later.
And one of my favorite tips — take the money you saved and donate it. It’s a beautiful way to keep the holiday spirit alive.
In stores, be cautious about sharing your information or opening new cards just for discounts.
Online, shop through secure connections and monitor your accounts weekly.
Add identity protection or credit monitoring — it’s like having a safety net.
You can’t always prevent fraud, but you can make sure you catch it fast. Protect your credit like it’s cash.
This season, give yourself the gift of peace of mind.
Shopping smart isn’t about saying no to joy — it’s about saying yes to awareness and healthy financial habits.
Thank you to Experian for having me on their #CreditChat and to all the panelists who shared their insights.
Remember: protect your credit, spend mindfully, and keep that Credit Boss glow shining bright all season long.
